Although I can't quantify it, I would characterize the blade exposure as slightly negative at the mildest setting. At a setting of five it's neutral to slightly positive.Doug Hansfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15174919444573120386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3515480284164565162.post-19692265659537543652017-02-04T15:18:52.086-05:002017-02-04T15:18:52.086-05:00You have given a great review. When I get tired of the great shaves from my Pearl closed comb, maybe I'll splurge on the Variant.<br />Perhaps the bottom bar to head misalignment comes from miscalibration of the post threads to the bade cap, in other words if the the beginning and endpoints of the threading were advanced, or retarded, whicheverr the case may be, then the top cap, and blade would be better aligned.<br />Just my 2 cents worth.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00293699795407880872noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3515480284164565162.post-55385103098091589292017-02-04T10:29:09.821-05:002017-02-04T10:29:09.821-05:00Another convert. :) The Variant has replaced my Pr...Another convert. :) The Variant has replaced my Progress in my regular razor rotation.mantic59https://www.blogger.com/profile/10170330078663138616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3515480284164565162.post-73382075720760998252017-02-04T08:20:31.755-05:002017-02-04T08:20:31.755-05:00The exposure (the distance of the blade edge above...The exposure (the distance of the blade edge above or below the shave plane) of the Slim is always positive; that is, the blade edge is a little above the plane at 1, and higher above the plane as the adjustment settings become more aggressive. Unfortunately, I don't have ANY realiable measurements, but the blade exposure of the Variant is more neutral -- certainly less positive than the Slim, and the Variant may have a slightly negative exposure at low settings -- I just don't know at the moment. It certainly gives a smoother, less irritating shave than the Slim. As for gap, well, that measurement isn't very meaningful because it's the distance between blade edge and nearest point on the safety bar. The SPAN is a better indicator, and is the distance between the blade edge and the point on the safety bar that determines the shave plane. Though the gap is *easier* to measure than span, it still isn't easy to get an accurate dimension, and, again, I have neither. I would say that both the Slim and the Variant have a wide range of adjustment but that the Variant has the capability to go milder, gentler, without compromising its ability to give an aggressive shave when desired. The Variant also has infinite adjustment settings while the Gillettes are limited to one of nine discrete adjustment points.Doug Hansfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15174919444573120386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3515480284164565162.post-84877531279128593502017-02-04T07:35:35.591-05:002017-02-04T07:35:35.591-05:00Have you measured the blade gap/exposure and compa...Have you measured the blade gap/exposure and compared it to the slim settings? I'd be very interested to know that. I had my Super-109 reconditioned and have been using it with great results since new years. My only gripe is I'm no longer fond of the longer handle. I originally bought it thinking I wanted the longer handle but learned afterwards it's ok but I prefer shorter.Stephen McGuirehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17054643595181585363noreply@blogger.com
